Malaysia is no different when it comes to the legitimate interests of other races. The word "other" presupposes a distinct and unique race set quite apart through constitutional fiat. Passing a law loaded with bias to benefit one particular ethnic race is a serious flaw, especially when it is woven into the fabric of a supreme law called a constitution.
One can only wonder what the Reid Commission was instructed to do in the early 1950s while drafting and creating a new constitution for Malaya. The thinking behind what constituted Malaya, and later Malaysia, will always haunt Malaysians, especially knowing that no Malayan was invited to sit in the Reid Commission although I know there were several eminent local lawyers in the then fledgling Malaya.

The recent clashes in the village of Dahshur, just south of Cairo, between the supporters of a Coptic laundry worker and a Muslim patron whose shirt he burned with an iron serve as another reminder of the need to devise homegrown strategies for tackling sectarian violence in Egypt. Moaz Mohamed, a Muslim, eventually succumbed to the severe burns he sustained from a Molotov cocktail, and violence resumed once again in the aftermath of his funeral, this time against the security forces protecting the village's Mar Girgis Church. 120 Coptic families have also been compelled to flee Dahshur, which the Grand Mufti of Egypt, Ali Goma'a, has claimed was done voluntarily to deescalate the violence in their village and has urged Muslims to provide these Copts with protection as they return to their homes.
Whether religion was the source of these confrontations or they were fundamentally acts of criminal behavior that have been couched in religious parlance becomes moot when we consider that evidently the irenic religious values of both Christianity and Islam were not communicated effectively and embraced profoundly enough to prevent this violence in the first place or offer nonviolent alternatives.
Indeed, the complexity of such noxious incidents as this one suggests the need to considerably rethink the one-dimensional reliance on both internal and external pressure to invigorate Egypt's commitment to religious freedom.
Among the myriad reforms under consideration in Egypt today, Article 2 of Egypt's constitution, which cites the principles of Shari'a as the main source of legislation, and a proposed new article that obligates all Egyptians to pay the Islamic zakat -- alms that benefit the poor -- have received a lot of attention in the past few days. Bishop Paul of Tanta, a Coptic representative on Egypt's Constituent Assembly, has recently added his voice to the choir of human rights activists who believe that a new statement should be affixed to Article 2 that safeguards Coptic autonomy over their religious affairs in no uncertain terms, which presumably includes their choice to either pay or withhold the zakat.
Even if well-intentioned and highly suitable in ideal political conditions, these provisions unsheathe a double-edged sword: while it is true that they may provide a legal framework that encourages government officials to take measures to prevent discrimination against Coptic Christians, especially under the watchful eye of locally placed human rights organizations and other NGOs, they may also counterintuitively embolden extremists who disagree with increasing the civil rights of Copts in equal measure to those of Muslims, thereby intensifying the persecution that these measures sought to undermine.
Given the yet untested political fortitude of policy-makers during this unprecedented episode in Egypt's history, it is also past time that the more mature Western democracies withhold their interference in Egypt's internal affairs using public channels.
When the U.S. State Department issues a statement, as it did a couple weeks ago, thatdenounces "both the Egyptian government's failure to curb rising violence against Coptic Christians and its involvement in violent attacks" in such a visible and public forum, as laudable as these indictments might appear on the surface, it only complicates matters even more. And, when U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton asserts that religious freedom in Egypt -- which debuted on the list of "countries of particular interest" in the 2011 International Religious Freedom Report -- is "quite tenuous," Egyptians worry how this and similar assessments might hit their country's threadbare pocketbook.
Two reasons that Western governments should temper their pious platitudes against Egypt's track-record are worth considering: first, these denouncements on behalf of Egypt's Coptic community only confirm the suspicions of extremists, real or imagined, that Copts have been colluding with U.S. foreign policy-makers, against whom widespread rebuke is axiomatic in Egyptian society. Second, these denouncements could put the constitutional enshrinement of Coptic religious self-governance in jeopardy, as ensuring their rights might give the impression to the Egyptian electorate that the Islamist-dominated Constituent Assembly bowed to American pressure -- always a bad thing in Egypt. This doesn't mean that such measures should not be taken in some form, but that the United States should tailor its actions and words -- stressing self-restraint and back-channel engagement -- to account for the current volatility of the Egyptian political landscape.
What's more, there's a precedent of Coptic disapproval of the United States' meddling in Egypt's internal affairs, even when their goal is to improve Coptic fortunes. Such hostility toward American interference was on display in 1998 when the U.S. Senate ratified theInternational Religious Freedom Act, which allowed Congress to reduce the $2 billion in foreign aid to Egypt if it did not take action to curb religious discrimination and contain sectarian violence. Although the American Coptic Association successfully lobbied the Senate appropriations subcommittee to tie the entirety of the $2 billion to the Egyptian government's improved respect for Coptic Christians, this was met with strongly-worded objections by prominent Coptic political and religious leaders living in Egypt, from Youssef Boutros-Ghali, the nephew of Boutros Boutros-Ghali, to Pope Shenouda III.
In this case, the Coptic community demurred over the negative impact that a loss of $2 billion in foreign aid would have on Egypt's fragile economy, which would amplify the adverse socio-economic conditions that tend to inflame violence. If Coptic Christians were identified as the orchestrators of such a duplicitous strategy, they'd be the first to feel the fury of Egyptian extremists who could view the economic pillory of their homeland as an affront to Muslim society.
These possible scenarios undermine the desired outcomes and are more about muscle-flexing by Western democracies than clear-thinking consideration of the complexities of human behavior, the nature of Egyptian political and cultural sensitivities and the need for gradual democratic reform, thereby subvert the legitimate internal, private channels for positively reforming policies and attitudes so they more willingly affirm religious freedom. Indeed, good things will come to those who wait in eager -- yet reflective and purposeful -- anticipation of an Egypt with "Muslim, Christian, one hand," as the Maspero demonstrators had courageously proclaimed almost one year ago.

In high school, I liked my looks, but I didn't know that other people did. I was never the hot girl. I was told: "When you grow up, you'll be pretty." Boys liked me, but I thought it was because I was nicer than most girls. I don't know what was going on with me, but up until my marriage, I only liked the guys who weren't that into me. The good guys, I'd get bored so fast.
Chris and I met at a restaurant. He had just moved to New York, but he started working immediately as an actor. I'd been waiting tables for four and a half years so I was like, "Wow, he's on it!" I was surprised I started falling for him because he was so clean-cut and beautiful, and that was never attractive to me. But I could see that he was talented, and every time he came around, he was just so nice. He didn't have that New York, actor-y, pessimistic sense of humor where everybody's too cool, just going pfft, pfft. He liked all these cheesy, romantic songs that to me were like blech. I couldn't believe I was going gaga over a guy who was playing "The Dance" by Garth Brooks on guitar in front of me! But he was doing it, singing, and I was like, "Aww! What a sweet soul!" He just seemed so wholesome, so pure.
God, I'll never be that dumb again. It was heartbreaking, the way I found out about everything. He was shooting a movie on location. For the first part of the shoot, he kept in contact but I could see him turning into a weirdo, being really distant, thinking they're doing this heavy shit that's gonna blow some minds, y'know? Like: "Oh, you wouldn't understand." Like they're making Apocalypse Now. It was creeping me out. I just wanted to go, "Dude, it's a movie. It's a bunch of hot people in make-up. Relax."
Our video chats got to the point where he was just: "Uh-huh. Uh-huh." So I thought, "Okay, I'll just leave him alone until he gets done with this character." But when he came home, something felt wrong. All of a sudden, he was really concerned with wearing "cool" clothes. He kept calling it Williamsburg. Like, now he's Mr. Grit, y'know? He was just acting like an asshole. Nothing felt true. And then I started getting that bad feeling. It was burning. One night we were in the kitchen and I just went, "Oh my God, Chris, are you having an affair?"
He slumped into the kitchen counter and said: "Really? You think after all this time being married we're not going to have feelings for someone else?" I was pretty sure who it was, they'd worked together on the movie. So I asked him: "Did you kiss her?"
He said: "No, it was just this emotional connection..."
I started crying. "I'm so sorry you had to go to her to get your emotional needs met. I always told you that you could talk to me about anything." He was clearly annoyed that we were even having this conversation. But I said, "I think we need to call a therapist."
At this point, I didn't even think he had sex with her -- or anybody else. I didn't even think he'd kissed her. I was so insecure, I started thinking that, somehow, this was all my fault. I must have done something to make him so unhappy. I thought maybe I was hideous looking. Or that maybe I was walking around with a faulty vagina. So I went to my gynecologist and I said, "Look at it. Test it out. Is it in working order?" I thought maybe I needed to get one of those surgeries down there [laughs]. But he said it was fine. And then I went to my girlfriend, who is bisexual, and I was like, "Look at it." And she was like, "You're fine!" And then she dropped her pants and said, "Look, they're all different." And hers did a weird thing, but it was fine, too [laughs].
So Chris and I went to the therapist. And the whole time he was acting like: "This is ridiculous." We went back home and he had to leave the next day for a photo shoot in LA. And that's when I started thinking: "I'm gonna do something so crazy when he's gone."
I never knew his [email] password; I wouldn't even think to ask. So after he left for the shoot, I called him, all frantic, like: "Oh, shit! School just called and I need to print out some pictures for something -- can I have your password?"
And he was like, "Uh, but..."
"Just give it real quick."
"Well, you could use..."
"No, no -- this is faster."
I did a good job. Real savvy. And that's how I saw all the emails between him and her. I just typed in the first letter of her name and there they were. He was telling her about how he'd been feeling dead and lifeless the last decade, and how now, finally, he knows what true passion is. He said he felt like he'd been strapped onto a rocket and launched into space. It was awful. My body went into shock. My hands closed up, and my feet. I couldn't hear. It was like I'd just watched someone get killed right in front of me. I called my friend Lynne and said, "Buy a pack of cigarettes." (I had quit smoking two years before.) So she came over, I got onto Chris' other computer and that's where I found all these photos of them in bed together. What I just hated -- and what stuck with me for so long -- were the pictures he took of her looking like a tortured, beautiful soul. That whole bit, like, Oh, don't look at me. There was one of her sitting outside the hotel room with their dirty sheets in a ball, like, oopsy daisy! It felt like they were laughing at me.
So I called him: "I found the emails and I saw the pictures." He said, "Ann, stop reading them."
I said, "Okay. I'm sorry."
But I didn't stop reading them. I forwarded them to myself and to my friend. Because I knew he'd erase them and I didn't want to be able to talk myself out of what I'd seen.
Everything fully came out around New Years. We were driving, and I said, "Have you ever been with anyone before this? Or is this the only time?"
He said, "Four or five others."
I couldn't even react anymore. I said, "There's got to be more. How can I try to fix something if I don't know the whole truth? Give me the whole truth so I can know if I can deal with it."
So on New Years day, he gave me the list -- about 40 names. One girl got pregnant; he had to pay for an abortion. Another one was one of my best friends. I was her maid of honor. She was at our wedding. I remember them singing, "You're the One that I Want" together, and I was just thinking, 'Oh, there's crazy Lexi humping my husband! What a funny gal!'
At that point, nothing would have shocked me, so I had to ask him, for real: "Have you ever killed anybody? Accidentally or anything? Have you ever raped anyone? Have you had sex with a man? Are you a pedophile? Did you ever sleep with my sister or my cousin? Just tell me the truth."
I was destroyed, and I was mad, but then I started thinking: 'This must be hard for him, too. He's got to have so much guilt. Let him process it, give him a chance to do the work he needs to do. Maybe this is a chance for us.' I was so willing. But he couldn't do it. And I got tired. I made plans to go to Palm Springs. Before I left, I said, "I'm afraid I'm going to have to let you go. I don't want to let you go, but I will if I have to."
He said, "Do whatever you have to do to be happy."
And that's what it took. I went to Palm Springs, did a ceremony for myself, let him go, came back, and said, "I want a divorce." And it felt so good. I agonized over that for the longest time. But then I really came alive.
You know when you're a kid, like eight-years-old, and nothing's gone wrong yet, everything's pure, and you feel like, 'Oh God, I can do anything'? That's how I feel again. I'm through being a "cool" girl. From now on, I'm only gonna love full-on, huge, and no games. I want to be completely transparent, through and through. Even when I think: 'Oh no, this is not a good side of me, this is an embarrassing side, this could be icky' -- I'm not going to act like it's not there.
I know now that you have to put everything on the table. If you don't, that's not fair to the other person because you have to at least give them the chance to love all those 'off' things about you. And if you can fall in love being completely who you are, that sounds like the best thing ever. If I end up being alone, so be it. But I don't want to fake anything ever, ever, ever again.
The misfortune of being born a girl still horrifies those of us fortunate enough to have had the opportunity to reach for the light of social and economic freedom with the benefit of education. The dreams for 120,000 girls attending schools and colleges in Swat Valley were shattered when militants of Pakistan's Taliban began their assault on education for girls, in 2006. Girls were banned from attending schools and colleges. Through propaganda radio, militant messages were regularly delivered, claiming educating girls was against Islamic principles. By 2007, more than 30 percent of the girls dropped out of school. To further strengthen their philosophy of keeping girls ignorant, the militants began to enforce their ban by blowing up and setting fires to an estimated 400 schools, and terrorizing the people of the region.
Once described as the Switzerland of Asia, the lush and picturesque Swat Valley is approximately the size of the state of Delaware. About a hundred miles from Pakistan's three most important cities, Peshawar, Rawalpindi, and Islamabad, the region was governed by hereditary rulers, called the Wali, until 1969 when Pakistan took control. The unspoiled region with its towering mountains, its cascading rivers and luscious forests, then became a vacation paradise for wealthy Pakistanis, until power shifted to the militants of Pakistan's Taliban.
At first, the militants had a free hand and even gained support from the village people, who languished in poverty and hopelessness for years in Upper Swat. The wealthy landowners had done nothing to improve the condition of the people and the area was ripe for class warfare.
The militants successfully began to expand their stronghold with the support from the locals and targeted the wealthy. When control by the militants escalated with brutal force, the Pakistani government stepped in. Armed conflict began in 2004 but was quickly diffused with a truce. But, when the militants attempted to expand their power base by violating the terms of the truce, 30,000 Pakistani troops swarmed into Swat Valley to regain control in 2007. Fierce fighting between the militants and Pakistani troops in 2009 killed thousands of men.
Devastating floods, in 2010, brought more misery to the 1.8 million inhabitants. Women and children were forced to flee, taking refuge in makeshift camps, without clean water, proper sanitation and medicine.
The misery in the Swat Valley and the plight of thousands of women and children, who have lost husbands and fathers, gave birth to Swat Relief Initiative, headed by Zebu Jilani, the granddaughter of Mian Gul Jhanzeb, the last ruler (Wali) of Swat. Ms. Jilani banded her family together and began a grass roots movement to help her people, focusing efforts on those refugee campsites which were off the radar of international aid organizations. She spends months at a time among the displaced women and children of Swat. She works to improve the lives of the destitute through community development and awareness programs. Amrojan is a woman who came to one these camps.
Her feet lacerated and bleeding, Amrojan walked for miles before she reached a campsite with her three little girls. Exhaustion, hunger, dehydration and despair had taken a grave toll, and the 35 year old mother looked like a wrinkled old woman and her daughters were in a state of shock. So many women in Swat Valley tell similar stories.
The village people huddled together in fear, inside their padlocked shacks as fighting continued. One night, soldiers made announcements over loudspeakers and ordered villagers to evacuate their homes. The Pakistan army was preparing to commence bombing in the area where the militants were suspected of hiding.
That night, Amrojan gathered a few things in a bundle, wiped her husband's burning brow, and set out with her three young daughters. They walked for hours without direction, deeper and deeper into the forest till Amrojan's husband collapsed, his fever making him weak and dizzy. Weary and frightened, the girls wept. It was time to rest. Amrojan made a bed of leaves for her sick husband and the family snuggled together for warmth and fell into an exhausted slumber.
At sunrise, Amrojan woke up, her youngest still clinging to her breast and the other two of her daughters still sleeping in their father's arms, who had died during the night. With the help of her daughters, Amrojan collected twigs and sticks and scratched out a shallow grave to bury her husband. Within minutes, her status as a person had changed. A widow without a son is subject to dire social and legal consequences.
When she reached the campsite, Amrojan threw herself on the ground and wailed. "Now I am mirath," she beat her chest. "Who will care for me and my little girls? I have no sons. I am mirath." The word mirath, is a derogatory term used to humiliate a mother who has no sons. It is also used as a curse word to diminish and devalue a woman. A widow has no right to inherit her husband's property and daughters cannot inherit any of their father's property either. Everything goes to the brothers of the husband, and in this case, Amrojan and her daughters would be left at the mercy of their charity.
Swat Valley Relief Initiative strives to help women achieve a better quality of life through educational seminars on hygiene, nutrition and disease prevention for children and emphasizes the importance of sending girls to school. Through education, each generation of women will be empowered and will raise a better generation of children; daughters who will have an opportunity to achieve their full potential as human beings; and sons, who will learn to honor their mothers, their sisters, their daughters and their wives instead of suppressing and subjugating them.
