The reasons for his strenuous objections are simple.
Ours is a secular nation and we have to fight to keep it that way against all attempts by PAS to change the fundamental rules and laws that form the secular basis of this modern and fast-developing nation.
PAS is an Islamic party that cannot and will not give up on hudud or Islamic state and its objection to secular laws, which it calls antiquated and colonial.
The party wants to turn the clock back to an era when crime and punishment were simple severing limbs for stealing, stoning to death for adultery and public whipping or jail terms for consuming alcohol.
But for some reason, presumably religious, PAS wants to implement hudud in a multi-ethnic society.
It is also regretable that Pakatan Rakyat and its leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had “arm twisted” PAS into agreeing to give up its cherished Islamic state objective for that of a welfare state as announced by partypresident Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang at the PAS muktamar last year.
Karpal’s stand against hudud, which has moved from a constitutional and legal issue to a political argument, is that hudud and Islamic state are not in the Buku Jingga, the document that spells out the compromises thrashed out by the three disparate parties of Pakatan.
“I can assure the people that the Islamic state agenda and hudud will not be included in the Pakatan manifesto,” Karpal said on Saturday, responding to calls by PAS leaders for him to quit calling for an end tohudud.
“DAP will not allow it,” he said, adding that hudud and Islamic state were concepts unsuitable for a multi-religious country like Malaysia.
Increasingly, however, Karpal is alone in DAP for opposing PAS over the hudud issue.
Neither Lim Kit Siang, the all powerful adviser nor his son Lim Guan Eng, the party’s secretary-general and Penang Chief Minister, or other key leaders are opposing PAS on matters that are crucial to voters in the upcoming general election.
The elder Lim had battled with the issues in the past and was punished by the public for going against their wishes in supporting PAS despite the party’s stand on these issues.
But in the 2008 general election, the public lost their fear of hudud and Islamic state and gave their backing, even voting for PAS candidates in mixed seats enabling the party to do well.
Emboldened by this support, DAP has been selling PAS to the Chinese community.
The party actively supports their candidates in by-elections, endorses their position on public matters by keeping silent and cooperates with them in states ruled by the Opposition coalition.
Anwar likewise “agrees to disagree” with PAS over many policies.
The Chinese voters, too, urged by DAP, backed PAS candidates in several by-elections since 2008, notably in the January 2011 Tenang by-election.
During that by-election, DAP went all out supporting PAS candidate Normala Sudirman who had caused a stir among voters by insisting on wearing gloves before shaking hands.
Karpal is alone in a party whose leadership simply wants to cooperate with PAS and turn a blind eye to the dangers of religious politics.
They believe PAS has a “liberal” side and that they can “control” PAS and inhibit its fundamental tendencies.
But the only person standing in their way is Karpal.
Said a DAP source: “Karpal is alone in seeing the dangers to a secular Malaysia that PAS poses and he speaks up. He is not afraid. Everybody else is for working with PAS for political expediency.”
Karpal is unrelenting going head-to-head with PAS Youth wing leaders led by its chief Nasrudin Hassan Tantawi over the past few weeks on the hudud issue.
PAS spiritual leader Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat backed the youth leaders by explaining that the party’s hududand Islamic state aspirations were not political but religious obligations.
The marriage of convenience between PAS and DAP is working well but Karpal constantly throws a spanner in the works with his fierce opposition.
Increasingly, he is isolated and alone in the DAP’s top leadership opposing hudud and this isolation encourages PAS to take on the DAP chairman.
Only some DAP grassroots leaders are openly supporting Karpal, whose strength lies in the fact that he is consistent in his opposition, has a wide following in society and is considered “untouchable” in the party.
“Karpal does not toe the party line … everybody else is either agreeing to disagree’ with PAS or has been cowed by the powerful Lim dynasty that rules DAP,” said a DAP source.
The ongoing war between PAS Youth leaders, who are supported by the PAS elders, and Karpal, adds a new and explosive dimension to the opposition to hudud and Islamic state.
It also shows that the DAP leadership is increasingly disconnected with some of their own grassroots who strongly oppose PAS for the continuing dangers it presents to a secular society.
On a personal level, PAS calling Karpal “outdated” and urging him to step aside has enraged the Tiger of Jelutong and his supporters into hitting back.

Several NGOs have lodged police reports on allegedly inflammatory comments posted on the Malaysiakini website, threatening to hold protests in front of its office as well as that of the Home Ministry's if no action is taken. Malays are polite and friendly but Muslims are belligerent , I got whacked left and right . Now just look at the threats hurled at Karpal Singh and those who say their minds. There are many videos too in the internet.

I think the best thing for all is that the main media to inform all the converts and those who knew the converts to come forward and announce publicly their conversions , so that all may know and act accordingly. If the converts fails to inform his/her close relatives , then the Islamic religious authorities cannot interfere at all. Its the converts fault and they should answer for themselves wherever they are . Who knows? .

"Some 200 subscribers used pseudonyms in Malaysiakini to criticise and lower the status of Islam.
"This would have consequences and bring chaos to this peaceful country," read three largely identical police reports from each NGO.

Malaysian Muslim People's Coalition (IRIMM), Dewan Ekonomi dan Sosial Muslim Malaysia (Desmma) and Malaysian Muslim Consumer's Association (PPIM) lodged the reports together at the Dang Wangi police district headquarters, Kuala Lumpur, at around 2.30pm today.

A representative from the Malaysian Indian Muslim Missionary Council (MIM) was also present to endorse the complaint.

In the Wednesday article, Malaysiakini reported that a group of Hindu devotees lodged police reports against Penang Islamic Affairs Department (JAIPP) for confiscating the ashes of M Nagamah, who was cremated in accordance to Hindu rites.

MCA scream anti Hudud everyday in the STAR and MCA is partnering Umno in BN .....so , what are all these PAS and mufti barking .....if DAP lose Malay votes , you mean MCA will not lose Malay votes....all these are obvious Umno propagandaThere are many here who supported Karpal and if you are of the opinion that Karpal is wrong... just name him and not implied that all who are for him are half-boiled eggs by starting with... "there are..." like as if those many that do not share your opinion are half-boiled eggs. Karpal appears to be unable to wise up. Umno or MCA yanks his anti-hudud chain and he unleashes a well known series of barks which is music to their ears and damaging to Pakatan. This trick never fails no matter how many times his chain is pulled. When will Karpal realize that hudud is no longer an issue with non-Malays? They know it is an academic issue and they want to see BN out as a higher priority. Please stop your anti-hudud rants, Karpal. Non-Malays will not think less of DAP because you did not voice your obligatory opposition. Please wise up and stop dancing to BN's tune.Actually it was Chuah Soiled Leg who day in and day out criticised Hudud and Islamic law.MCA STAR always attacks Islamic law and Hudud. So why pick on karpal? Why not UMNO lose Malay votes cause of MCA rejecting Hudud law,

But he will fall in the end together with his sons and daughters.

If one could believed motivators that by repeating words of encouragement , then the positive would happened, then chanting , reciting verses could also bring the result according to the verses. Even if one do not understand the verses. So be careful what one is repeating. That is why positive prayers and worship in spirit and in truth is very important and would transformed the world into paradise or the reverse could happened if human chant, recites and pray in the negative without knowing it. For the liars would lead all into destruction.

If one is angry, full of hatred, depressed, lost, seeking pleasures, seeking revenge, a drunkard, a glutton or praying under distress, then one need to examine one's belief and life. The senior officer then, refused to open and read the support letter from MP Chew Mei Fun and told my relative that “tak payah baca lah. Pakistani authorities have arrested a Christian girl and are investigating whether she violated the country’s strict blasphemy laws after neighbours surrounded her house and demanded police take action, according to a police officer.
Zabi Ullah, a Pakistani police officer, said on Monday that the girl was arrested on Thursday after hundreds of residents angry over reports she had allegedly burned religious papers gathered outside her house in Islamabad.
There were varying reports on the girl’s age. Zabi Ullah said she was 16 while other officials have said she was either 12 or 11.
He said the police took the girl to the police station, and that she has been held for 14 days while authorities investigate.
“About 500-600 people had gathered outside her house in Islamabad, and they were very emotional, angry and they might have harmed her if we had not quickly reacted,” he said.
“Some Muslims from the area claim the girl had burned pages of the Quran, and we are investigating, and we have not reached any conclusion.”
Al Jazeera’s Imtiaz Tyab, reporting from Islamabad on Monday, said: “President Asif Ali Zardari has ordered his interior minister to launch an investigation into this case which has attracted much attention not just in Pakistan but around the world.
“The questions the president wants answered is why this girl was charged under the country’s blasphemy laws and not not as a juvenile because she is only 11 years old.”
Controversial law
In Pakistan, anyone found guilty of insulting Islam’s Prophet Muhammad, or holy book, the Quran, can be sentenced to death, although they are rarely if ever executed.
Another police official, Qasim Niazi, said when the girl was brought to the police station she had a shopping bag that contained various religious and Arabic-language papers that had been partly burned but no Quran.
A police officer that did not want to be identified due to the sensitivity of the case  said the matter would likely be dropped once the investigation is completed and the atmosphere is defused, saying there was “nothing much to the case”.
Angry mobs have been known to sometimes take the law into their own hands and beat or kill people who are accused of violating the blasphemy laws.
In July, thousands of people dragged a Pakistani man accused of desecrating the Quran from a police station in the central Pakistani city of Bahawalpur, beat him to death and then set his body on fire.
Attempts to revoke or alter the blasphemy laws have been met with violent opposition, however.
Last year, two prominent Pakistani political figures who spoke out against the laws were killed, in attacks that raised concerns about the rise of religious extremism in Pakistan.
Liberal politician Salman Taseer was shot and killed by one of his own guards in January 2011, and in March 2011, armed men assassinated Shahbaz Bhatti, the only Christian minister in Pakistan’s cabinet.readmorehttp://engagechittarkootaijamath.blogspot.com/2012/08/thirupachi-aruvale-in-nerve-jangling.html
Datuk Seri Najib Razak must act now and snuff out once and for all attempts by his ruling Barisan Nasional’s (BN) main party to inflame religious sensitivities in the run-up to national polls, his political foes from Pakatan Rakyat (PR) reminded the prime minister today as they denounced a controversial Facebook posting in Umno Youth’s official page yesterday.
The controversial poster, which was taken down several hours after it appeared on the political youth wing’s social network site early yesterday afternoon, had read: “Jika anda setuju untuk jadikan KRISTIAN sebagai agama rasmi persekutuan Malaysia, teruskan sokongan anda kepada Pakatan Rakyat. (If you agree to make CHRISTIANITY the official religion of the federation of Malaysia, continue supporting Pakatan Rakyat.) ‘God bless you my son’.”

DAP national organising secretary Teresa Kok. — File pic
DAP national organising secretary Teresa Kok called the Facebook post a “childish” move, and urged Najib, who is Umno president and chairman of the 13-member BN coalition, to act on the matter.
“I think Najib has to really look into his own party… there are certain elements in the party trying to destroy the country by playing religious fire (sic),” she told The Malaysian Insider today, adding that it was an attempt to “spoil” the existing religious- and racial-harmony.
“I think Najib should seriously look into it, otherwise his slogan of 1 Malaysia will become a laughing stock,” said the Seputeh MP, noting that it was posted before the Muslim Aidilfitri holiday today, which she said is also “celebrated by all races”.
Kok — who was at the Selangor mentri besar’s Aidilfitri open house party in Shah Alam — said she was glad that Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin acted swiftly on the matter and removed the incendiary poster from the wing’s Facebook wall within hours of its appearance.
The Umno Youth chief had yesterday denied that the picture was uploaded by members of his team or that the wing supported the statement. The poster was taken down from the website at about 6.30pm yesterday.

PAS vice president Datuk Mahfuz Omar. — File pic
PAS vice president Datuk Mahfuz Omar said “the statement in Pemuda Umno’s page clearly shows it is influenced by sentiments shown by Umno and the mainstream media”, adding that the spread of such sentiments “will in the end cause unrest.”
“Although Pemuda Umno say they do not censor what is posted on the Facebook page, the reality is this is the result of Umno and the mainstream media’s attitude,” he said, calling the youth wing by its Malay name.
He said the move is intended to “scare Muslim voters to make them afraid to vote for Pakatan Rakyat (PR)”, but adds that Malaysians are “mature” enough to be unaffected by such “provocations”.

PKR’s vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar.— File pic
PKR’s vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar also condemned the poster, calling it a “sordid display of bigotry, lies and irresponsibility by an organ (of) the ruling party.”
“At the very least, the Pakatan Rakyat deserves an immediate apology,” she said in a text message to The Malaysian Insider in an immediate response to the poster yesterday.
“I await the authorities’ speedy action to charge the person held responsible for any posts on the Umno Youth FB Page,” she said, noting that Section 114A of the Evidence Act would be a relevant law.
The prime minister had said on Twitter last week that the federal government would revisit Section 114A that presumes guilt on an accused person prosecuted for cyber-offences, but Information, Communications and Culture Minister, Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim later said the law, that was passed by Parliament in April and came into force last month, would stay.
Yesterday’s Facebook picture provoked an uproar on the popular social network with some cyber citizens supporting the statement and others condemning the Umno youth wing for attempting to fan emotions and religious sentiments between Christians and Muslims on the eve of Aidilfitri, one of the biggest holidays in multicultural Malaysia’s calendar.
The Facebook post appeared to suggest that a vote for PR will catapult Christianity into Islam’s unquestioned position as Malaysia’s religion, showing that faith is still being used to scare off the crucial Malay-Muslim vote in the run-up to national polls.
The picture is a reminder of Malay daily Utusan Malaysia, which last year placed on its front page an unsubstantiated report suggesting that the DAP was conspiring with the Church to install a Christian as prime minister and create a Christian Malaysian state.

“Hold fast to the hope of God, all together, and be not divided.” –Quran 3:103
“Islam is simple,” the taxi driver explained to me as he drove me to the Center for Shariah Studies in Muscat, the capital of Oman in the southeastern corner of the Arabian Peninsula. “Basically, Islam is like a tree, and all of the various denominations are branches on the tree, they make up the entirety of the religion,” he said. The driver’s insightful comment introduced me to the beliefs of the Ibadi denomination in Islam, which represents a majority of Omani citizens and a small minority of Muslims worldwide.
My recent journey to Oman brought new insights, offered both by erudite scholars of Islamic law as well as ordinary Omanis. Home to Ibadis, as well as Sunnis, small groups of several branches of Shiism and foreigners from various faith traditions, Oman represents a unique situation of relative interreligous harmony. In a time where intra- and inter-religious conflicts seem to dominate the headlines, Oman is a stable nation ruled by an absolute monarch, Sultan Qaboos. Perhaps partly due to the strict rule of the Sultan, Oman has seen little turmoil in recent years. Omanis are proud of their country’s tolerant attitude toward religious minorities and although they like to differentiate themselves through their distinct Ibadi background, they consider any Muslim who prays toward the direction of Mecca to be a Muslim, no matter what their specific theological beliefs may be.
Oman represents a calm oasis in the midst of a cyclone of intra-Muslim ignorance and brutality. My time there stirred me to reflect on the disheartening situation of Muslims in the modern world and their futile struggle to create impenetrable boundaries based on superficial religious differences. While around the Muslim-majority world, Sunnis, Shiites, Ibadis and others have lived in relative calm and harmony for hundreds of years, recent political factors have kindled the flames of sectarian violence.

MCA appeals to the basest fears of the Chinese in Malaysia by telling them that it can save them from PAS’s Islamic state. And I certainly do not agree when some in Umno tell Malays to fear the rise of Christianity or even the threat of the Chinese to perceived Malay supremacy. This is not the spirit of the Barisan Nasional (BN) that was set up by Tun Abdul Razak Hussein after the May 13 1969 race riots to bring together all Malaysians under one umbrella. On this day when many Malaysians celebrate the act of forgiveness, is it not time to take back the country from politicians on either side of the divide who only seek to exploit our vilest fears and divisions?

HOW HYPOCRITICAL! MCA tells DAP to control PAS but SILENT on Umno & Dr M support for hudud
DAP Parliamentary leader Lim Kit Siang need not repeat the familiar phrase that DAP is against having PAS hudud law in Malaysia as they are merely said for self-gratification.
If he really is sincere in settling DAP’s differences with PAS over hudud, the solution is simple; he and DAP Secretary General Lim Guan Eng must use their influence to urge other Pakatan leaders to issue a joint statement saying that PAS has abandoned its theocratic state and hudud law agenda, and the amendment of the PAS party constitution to fit this joint statement.
Although Kit Siang has issued statements saying that PAS hudud law is not part of Pakatan’s common policy, yet we still see the enforcement of certain Islamic policies such as the ban on the sale of lottery tickets and the separation of men and women in cinemas in Kelantan, as well as the demolition of the pig abbatoir and the implementation of the 50% Bumi housing quota policy in Kedah.
Are all these part of Pakatan’s common policy? If it is not, then why is DAP keeping silent and stepping aside quietly to allow PAS to implement these policies uninhibited?
Agree to disagree – anything wrong with that?
Kelantan Menteri Besar Dato’ Nik Abdul Aziz has repeatedly said that PAS seeks to fulfill its ultimate ambition of establishing a theocratic state and implementing hudud law, and not matter how many times DAP opposes them, this stand will not change. PKR de facto leader Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim has also implied his agreement towards having hudud law.
Thus it is painfully obvious that DAP voices its opposition towards hudud and claiming that having PAS hudud law is not part of Pakatan’s common policy, in reality they are subservient to PAS.
Besides that, PAS has also repeatedly said that they will not change their ambition simply because DAP opposes it. Thus to cover up this infighting, all DAP can do is to say that Pakatan parties have “agreed to disagree”
Former prime minister Mahathir Mohamad, who during his 22-year tenure had been responsible for ensuring that PAS-led Kelantan could not pass its Hudud bill enactment, has now invited the Islamic party to join hands with UMNO to implement the Islamic penal code.
According to Harakahdaily, Mahathir’s condition is that PAS leaves Pakatan Rakyat, the coalition led by his nemesis Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim. Many analysts rate the Pakatan as having a real chance to wrest the federal government from the BN in the next general election which is widely expected to be held within the next few months.
“UMNO will ensure a fully compliant Islamic state if PAS has a big heart to join UMNO. Other Islamic countries are also putting hope on Malaysia, but there are still people wanting to split the Muslims. That’s why our goal is not achieved,” Malay daily Sinar Harian had quoted Mahathir as saying.
The former UMNO president had once threatened to impose emergency in the form of ‘Mageran’ (National Operation Council) on Kelantan if the state went ahead and implemented hudud on Muslims convicted of serious crimes.
Mahathir had also previously remarked that if hudud laws were implemented, there would be many Muslims without limbs. He labeled the laws which include beheading, stoning to death, whipping as well as amputation of limbs as being outdated, adding that the Islamic laws’ requirement for solid evidence and witnesses meant it could not be applied in the modern context.
Willing to bypass all the other races & religions
Mahathir’s backtracking has put a cat among the pigeons. While it may rile DAP leaders, it also challenges non-Muslim component parties in the BN such as the MCA, MIC, Gerakan and the Christian-majority East Malaysian parties.
However, Pakatan leaders say it is the Muslims in PAS that Mahathir is really targeting.
“I think Mahathir has just told PAS members that if they really want hudud and an Islamic state, they should join hands with UMNO. This is the fastest way for PAS to have a realistic chance to get the two-thirds majority in Parliament it needs to pass hudud,” PKR vice president Chua Jui Meng told Malaysia Chronicle.
“It is also a most unethical statement as usual from Dr M. It suggests that he and UMNO are willing to bypass the non-Malays in the governing of this country. To retain power, UMNO is willing to shut out all the other races and all the other religions to form a monopoly with PAS. Of course, PKR is confident that PAS will rebuff such an underhanded move.”
Raison d’etre
Unlike UMNO and despite pressure from Pakatan partner DAP, PAS has never wavered from publicly stating hudud as one of its ultimate aspirations along with the creation of a ‘true’ Islamic state as the Muslim religion is its raison d’etre.
Nonetheless, party leaders from president Hadi Awang to Spiritual Adviser Nik Aziz Nik Mat have assured that any implementation of hudud would affect only Muslims and pledged they would respect the Federal Constitution, which means that they accept they will have to wait until they managed to swing the necessary majority in Parliament required to get the Bill passed.
“We are either Muslims, Christians, Hindus, Buddhists, Sikhs or others. Islam celebrates religious plurality and acknowledges the ‘claim of exclusivity to its belief and teachings’ and accords a respect to the ‘absolutist doctrine’ of all transcendental religions,” PAS strategist and MP for Kuala Selangor Dzulkefly Ahmad said in a recent blog posting entitled A political contest beyond Hudud.
“And the bottom-line is, we are all Malaysians by way of belonging to one nation called Malaysia. Yes that is the identity we all share and cherish together, to have a nation worthy of our love, respect and sacrifice.
Serious trouble
A political analyst had also told Harakahdaily that Mahathir’s latest remark showed that UMNO was in “serious trouble” in winning the hearts and minds of Muslims.
“Mahathir did not want to see hudud implemented at all cost when he was in power with two third majority for 22 years. Now he says he wants.
“He is just capitalising on the growing anger against DAP’s Karpal Singh to solidify Malay votes for UMNO, which he knows is faced with a historic defeat. The party is in serious trouble,” she added.
The UMNO-owned media has been involved in a campaign to portray DAP as being anti-Islam following Karpal’s remarks opposing PAS’s plan to implement hudud law on Muslims. The campaign includes a statement by a little-known Muslim preacher in Kelantan who declared that it is haram (illicit) for Muslims to vote for DAP.
Critics have lashed out at the so-called ‘pondok fatwa’ (Islamic ruling from a small-time cleric), pointing out that by the same logic, Muslims should also not vote for candidates from MCA and Gerakan which have strongly opposed any form of Islamic laws.

MCA is in the federal government so it should remember that they are voted to speak out for the rakyat and put thingss right for the nation and the people.not to rob and plunder the nation and suppress and oppress the common people. Thats why common voters including me HATE MCA to the core..

Why am I angry? MCA is nothing but a tool and a decor piece for big brother (and that is UMNO)!
Did they fight on behalf of the rakyat (people) or the political bully (UMNO)? Look at the MCA’s failures and actions.

Amir Amsaa said that any criticism of the matter should be directed at JAIPP, but not Islam itself.

Dewan Ekonomi dan Sosial Muslim Malaysia (Desmma) Mohd Fazil AbdullahDesmma president Mohd Fazil Abdullah (right), who lodged one of the reports, also urged Malaysiakini not to publish such sensitive issues.

He described the issue as an ‘isolated case' in which the deceased had not informed her next-of-kin of her conversion and the online news portal should not have played it up.

"We urge Malaysiakini to stop giving space to statements that could affect the harmony, sensitivities and tolerance within Malaysia's multiethnic society," he said.

Effigy of Karpal Singh

Meanwhile, MIM secretary general Mohammed Shariff Ghani noted that ‘body snatching' allegations are not new and urged Muslim converts to take necessary precautions.

Malaysian Indian Muslim Missionary Council (MIM) secretary general Mohammed Shariff Ghani"I recommend whoever who converts into Islam to contact the relevant religious departments and to practice the religion. Don't cause an issue when you pass away," said Mohammed Shariff (right).

He stressed that no Muslim would condone another Muslim being cremated because it is against the religion's beliefs.

On a separate issue raised during the same press conference outside the district police headquarters, IRIMM secretary-general Zainol Abidin Ahmad said a protest could be held against DAP chairperson Karpal Singh next week for allegedly questioning hudud law.

IRIMM secretary-general Zainol Abidin Ahmad"We may do a protest in Pulau Pinang against Karpal Singh where we would probably burn his effigy," said Zainol Abidin (left).

When asked, he said the protest is slated to take place after Friday prayers in Teluk Air Tawar, Butterworth.

"We warn the DAP chairperson not to play with fire. Do not press Malaysian Muslims on sensitive issues about religion and religious laws to be point of turning the issue into a racial conflict," he said, urging Karpal to apologise.

He alleged in his police report that whilst watching TV recently, some time before the Raya celebrations, Karpal was shown questioning hudud.
